In Texas alone, approximately 1.7 million persons over the age of 18 have diabetes and many others remain undiagnosed or untreated.
- High – risk population
- African Americans – 13.1%
- Hispanics – 9.1%
- Whites – 7.5%
Major Types of Diabetes
Type I – Juveniles Diabetes - usually occurs in children
Type II — Most common form of diabetes –usually occur in adults
Warning Signs of Diabetes
- Excessive thirst
- Excessive hunger
- Blurry vision
- Always tired
- Frequent urination
- Frequent infections
- Numbness in hands or feet
- Tingling in hands or feet
Risk Factors
- Excess body weight
- Lack of physical exercise
- Advancing age
- Heredity – family history
- Ethnic background- African American, Hispanic, Native American
