District 1


Sylvan Avenue and Beckley/Commerce Project Updates

​Two projects of interest to District 1 residents are the reconstruction of Sylvan Avenue, north of I-30, and the reconfiguration of the Beckley Avenue/Commerce St intersection.  Both of these projects are located in adjacent Council District 6 but they are vital routes in and out north Oak Cliff.

Project Updates:

February 21, 2018

Sylvan Ave.:

  • Project name:   Sylvan Avenue from Fort Worth Avenue to Singleton Boulevard (PB06U802)
  • Scope of work:  Includes reconstructing Sylvan Avenue to 4 lane divided with bike lanes, with 10-inch thick reinforced concrete pavement, storm drainage, water and wastewater main replacement.
  • Construction cost:   $7,663,718
  • Construction start:  August 1, 2017
  • Estimated construction complete:   Winter 2019           


Accomplishments for the week of Feb. 10, 2018 to Feb. 16, 2018:

  • Continued with the installation of the box culvert connections at Fabrication Street and at Muncie Avenue (90% complete);
  • Continued with wastewater installation at Fabrication Street; and
  • Landscaping specialist pruned existing Pecan Tree on west parkway (north of Commerce Street), reducing the overhang above Sylvan Avenue pavement.


Planned tasks for the week of Feb. 17, 2018 to Feb. 23, 2018:

  • Rainfall is being experienced throughout the entire week and bad weather conditions slowed construction progress;
  • Continue with the installation of the box culvert connections at Fabrication Street and at Muncie Avenue;
  • Continue with wastewater installation at Fabrication Street;
  • New water main activation is eminent, Dallas Water Utilities to provide final inspection and approval of new water underground mains and appurtenances;
  • Pavement subgrade preparation is to begin shortly on the east side of Sylvan Avenue upon completion of all underground utilities under future pavement (2/21/18: 92% complete); and
  • Awaiting water main tie-ins.

 

Beckley Ave./Commerce St.:

  • Project name:        North Beckley Avenue at Commerce Street (PB98N972)
  • Scope of work:      Includes reconstructing North Beckley at Commerce Street, with 11-inch thick reinforced concrete pavement, storm drainage, water/wastewater main replacement, bike lanes, traffic signals, paver crosswalks, and landscaping rain gardens.
  • Construction cost:   $7,088,767
  • Construction start:  October 19, 2015
  • Estimated construction complete:   March 2018


Accomplishments for the week of Feb. 10, 2018 to Feb. 16, 2018:

  • Completed with the installation of 3 water services that connect to new Main Street water main, Contractor ready for 24-inch water main tie-in;
  • Continued advancing with pedestrian plazas;
  • Placed concrete sidewalk of the east parkway around the Pecan tree (south of Commerce Street);
  • Completed installation of grate inlet west of sidewalk in the east parkway (south of Pecan Tree); and
  • Continued placing concrete for rain gardens and other sidewalk areas.


Planned tasks for the week of Feb. 17, 2018 to Feb. 23, 2018:

  • Rainfall is being experienced throughout the entire week and bad weather conditions slowed construction progress;
  • Tie-in of 24-inch water main was set back to 2/26/18 due to unsafe welding conditions in the waterline trench resulting from steady rain on 2/20/18 (pavement activities to continue near railroad bridge once 24-inch transmission main is put in-service);
  • Continue advancing with pedestrian plazas; and
  • Continue with placing concrete for rain gardens and other sidewalk areas.
