Planning for the J. Erik Jonsson library began in 1973. The building was designed by the Dallas architectural firm, Fisher & Spillman. The funding was authorized in the 1975 and 1978 Bond Programs. Construction began in 1979 and was completed in 1982 by Huber, Hunt & Nichols and Avery Mays, Construction Managers. The 563,000 square foot building, which has eight floors above grade and two floors below grade, is structural steel with pre-cast concrete panels. A 150-plus car garage is located in the basement of the building. The 2.6 acre plaza provides the setting for the library and a link from downtown to the City Hall Plaza.
