There are two other critical factors that affect how far back a driver can begin to clearly read the sign message:
1. Character size (letter height)
2. Viewing distance
Obviously, the two are related—the larger the character, the longer the viewing distance.
The letter height on the freeway dynamic message signs is 18 inches. The City currently uses 12-inch letters on our arterial dynamic message signs. The higher the average speed of approaching vehicles, the longer viewing distance required to give adequate time to read the entire message.
