What is this project?

Fire Station No. 4, located at 816 S. Akard and Canton Streets, has served its response area since 1953 and is the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department's (DFR) highest-priority station for replacement. The project includes relocating and constructing a new station with five apparatus bays, updated operational and support spaces, and infrastructure designed to meet current Dallas Fire-Rescue service requirements for the downtown area. The current site is too small to accommodate a 5-bay station.

The plan for this replacement fire station includes standard DFR features such as

  • Air‑pressurized decontamination areas: Rooms that prevent contaminants from spreading into clean parts of the station
  • Bifold bay doors for quicker vehicle exit: Fast‑opening doors allowing fire trucks to leave the station quickly
  • Emergency storm shelter: Protected space designed to keep occupants safe during severe weather
  • Living spaces: Areas where firefighters sleep, eat, and stay while on duty
  • Secure employee parking: Designated parking area accessible only to authorized personnel.
  • Fitness space: Dedicated room for exercise and physical training
  • ADA-compliant public areas: Public spaces designed to meet accessibility requirements for all visitors

The replacement facility is planned to accommodate a multi-bay apparatus layout that could expand as call volume grows in the service area, is intended to reduce response times, and to reduce the need for additional fire stations in the surrounding area.

Funding

Based on information presented to City Council, the full $22M estimated cost is proposed to be funded through the November 2026 Bond; no other funding sources have been identified to date.

How This Fits Into the November 2026 Ballot

This project would be funded through City of Dallas Proposition A — Public Safety Facilities, a $443M general obligation bond authorization. Proposition A is also planned to fund several other public safety facility projects not covered on this fact sheet, including the Law Enforcement Training Center, the Public Safety Training Complex, the Emergency Operations Center/911 Facility, and a consolidated Dallas Police Department Property Room, Evidentiary Vehicle Storage Facility, and Crime Lab.

Under Texas law, the official ballot language for this proposition is required to state: “This is a tax increase”; however, the city's tax rate will not increase related to this bond program. The estimated repayment for all of Proposition A, including principal and interest, is $629,618,180 over a term not to exceed 20 years.
