An earthquake is simply the ground shaking caused by the sudden movement of rock in the Earth's crust -- usually at a fault line. Faults are areas of crushed rock between blocks of crust.

Earthquakes can happen any where, at any time, and for a wide variety of reasons. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) constantly updates their earthquake hazard map in the aftermath of earthquakes in previously stable areas.
