About the Commission on Disabilities

The Commission on Disabilities advises the Mayor, City Council, and City departments about issues of importance to people with disabilities, recommending policies and practices to the City regarding the concerns of people with disabilities, and encourages understanding among people with various disabilities to meet the needs of Dallas’ diverse community.

Mission

Make recommendations on issues pertaining to the full spectrum of needs, rights, and privileges of people with disabilities.

Purpose

To advise the City Council on City-related issues and provide a forum for voicing the concerns of and meeting the needs of the City’s diverse disability community.

Duties

The Commission on Disabilities advocates, educates, develops, and provides resources on programs and policies that:

  • Provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
  • Address accessibility issues.
  • Enhance the quality of life for Dallas residents who have disabilities.
  • Address the issues pertaining to alcoholism and drug abuse.
  • Take full advantage of all federal, state and local funding opportunities.
  • Ensure adequate housing for people with disabilities.
  • Ensure accessible communications for people with disabilities.
