National Preparedness Month 2024

DCH Body

September 2024 is the 20th anniversary of National Preparedness Month!

National Preparedness Month is an opportunity to evaluate you and your family's personal preparedness, and take action to make sure that you are ready for a disaster.

There are four steps to getting prepared:

  1. Make a Plan: During and after a disaster, you may need to communicate with your family, evacuate from your home, or shelter-in-place. Being prepared means making a plan for you and your family, so everyone knows what to do and where to go when disaster strikes. Visit Ready.gov/plan and start making a plan today.
  2. Build a Kit: After a disaster, you may be on your own for several days. Being prepared means having an emergency kit stocked with food, water, and other emergency supplies, such as flashlights and prescription medications. Your kit should be designed, at a minimum, to sustain you and your family for 3 days. Visit Ready.gov/kit to start building your kit today.
  3. Stay Informed: Before, during, and after a disaster, being able to receive life-saving information can be vital to keeping you and your family safe. The City of Dallas Office of Emergency Management & Crisis Response (EMCR) manages the city’s emergency notification system, DallasAlert. You can sign up to receive emergency and weather notifications via text, voice call, and email from the City of Dallas. Visit DallasAlert.com to sign up for emergency notifications today.
  4. Get Involved: The City of Dallas EMCR manages a disaster volunteer program called the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). CERT training emphasizes the importance of personal preparedness and accountability by training you, our residents, on how to be prepared for disasters and how to be involved in city response and recovery efforts. Training is held several times a year, including one training in Spanish annually. Visit DallasCERT.com to get involved today.
