
Phyllis Wheatley School

Built in 1922 for African-American students, The Phyllis Wheatley School still serves as the center point of the surrounding neighborhood. It is named for Phyllis Wheatley, an African-American 18th century poet who has the distinction of being America's second published female poet. This building exemplifies the Spanish eclectic style of architecture.
