Scope and Content
Steel engraving of George Mifflin Dallas (1792–1864), American statesman, Vice President of the United States under President James K. Polk. George Dallas is one of the possible sources for the name of the City of Dallas; though, the credit has never been substantiated. He is also a possible source for the naming of Dallas County (Texas) which was named in 1846. This claim is also unsubstantiated.
The engraving was removed from the book and presented to the City of Dallas on April 2, 1941, by Washington, D.C., attorney Herbert R. Grossman. A letter from Dallas Mayor Woodall Rodgers to Dallas City Secretary Earl Goforth accompanies the portrait. The engraving is by T. B. Welch of Philadelphia and appeared in a volume of
The National Gallery of Distinguished Americans (Philadelphia: James Herring and James Longacre, 1854).
The collection contains the engraving from the book along with a typescript letter.
