Scope and Content
The City of Dallas collaborated with County, State, and Federal governments to build the major components of its regional highway and freeway infrastructure; an eastbound-westbound freeway was planned in the mid-1940s, and work began in 1947. Its progress was slowed down by the high cost of rights-of-way, but by 1952, the project moved under the authority of the state and federal governments as it became U.S. Interstate 20. Interstate 20 was declared completed in 1976.
Collection consists of a single typescript document containing a chronological list of Dallas City Council resolutions relating to the East-West Expressway 1952-1955 and a short description of each resolution. The resolutions themselves pertain to the Texas State Highway Department; letters, petitions, and resolutions from community groups and citizens; and approval for purchases of services and rights-of-way.
