Scope and Content
Collection documents the City of Dallas’ attempts to complete its city hall, called the Municipal Building. The Fred A. Jones Company was one of the Southwest United States’ leading contractors between 1906 and 1930 and began construction of the Municipal Building in early 1913. Because the building company filed for bankruptcy later that year, the City of Dallas Board of Commissioners passed a resolution to accept the sale and transfer of materials to a receiver, C. C. Street, Jr., and proceeded with the completion of the building. The Municipal Building opened October 17, 1914, designed by Lang and Witchell Architects.
Jones (1875-1928) was a consulting and construction engineer in Dallas and built many buildings throughout the Southwest. As a consultant, he played a prominent part in the development of the interurban railroad systems and water supplies of North Texas. Among the buildings erected under his supervision are the original Dallas Country Club, Dallas Hall of Southern Methodist University, the Southland Life Building, White Rock Lake and Wastewater Purification Plant, and the Texas Farm and Ranch Building.
The collection consists of three typescript pages (one a duplicate of page two), a transcription of an unnumbered City of Dallas resolution adopted November 19th, 1913 [Minute Book #8, pages 539-540].
