Scope and Content
Collection documents a 1920 attempt to block the construction of Texas Baptist Memorial Sanitarium on Gaston Avenue in Dallas, Texas.
According to the petition, signed by nearby property owners William Doran, W. Wakefield, and John R. Worley, the signers were concerned that “all races of people will be treated at said free dispencery” and that “Negroes and Mexicans as well as other races will be continuously both day and night in and around and about said free dispencery and as a consequence in and around and about our homes.” A response to the petitioning citizens from the City of Dallas is unknown.
Texas Baptist Memorial Sanitarium grew from a 25-bed facility in 1903, rebuilt in 1909 with 364 beds, and again in 1920, to Baylor University Medical Center, the flagship of Baylor Health Care System. The system includes Baylor College of Medicine, Baylor College of Dentistry, and an extensive array of specialty medicine programs and facilities.
The collection contains a two-page typescript petition filed September 10, 1920, with D.C. McCord, Building Inspector for the City of Dallas.
