Scope and Content
Collection consists of deeds, correspondence, abstracts, maps, and related deed documentation.
A deed is a written document by which title to real estate is conveyed from one party to another. In this collection, the deeds relate to work occurring in, with, and for the City of Dallas, frequently with the sewerage system. The deeds were deposited with the Office of the City Secretary and may be duplicated at the Dallas County Clerk's office.
The collection contains over 2000 deeds of varying types, including
Abstract—A document describing the significant aspects, in an abbreviated manner, of all recorded deeds, mortgages, leases, and other instruments affecting the title to a piece of land.Easement—A right held by a person to either enjoy or make limited use of another entity's real property.Quit Claim—A deed that does not imply the grantor holds the title, but which surrenders and gives to the grantee any possible interest or rights that the grantor may have in the property.Right of Way—(1) The right to pass over property owned by another, usually based upon an easement. (2) A path or thoroughfare over which passage is made. (3) A strip of land over which facilities such as highways, railroads, or power lines are built. Some folders contain maps related to the properties in question. They show neighborhood street names and property boundaries at a particular date.
Organization
The collection is organized chronologically and then alphabetically within the year.
A note on the naming convention: For married couples where both first names are known, the names are used, and the names are joined with the word and (e.g., Linne W Barrett and Edward P Dougherty, WC and Laura Harvey). For married couples where the woman's name is unknown, the names are written using the Mr and Mrs titles (e.g., Mr and Mrs AJ Burkhead).
