​Scope and Content

Collection contains a publication that shares facts and information on the City of Dallas.  Over 13,000 journalists received not only the guide from Dallas boosters, greeters, and convention planners but also press kits, briefings, and tourist and convention information.

The factbook provides a high-level introduction to Dallas and other parts of the Metroplex.  It focuses on lifestyle, culture, and industry in the area.  At the time of publication in 1984, the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex covered eleven counties, one hundred eighty-one municipalities, and 8360 square miles.

The 1984 Republican Party National Convention took place in Dallas, Texas, from August 20 to August 23, 1984, with 2235 delegates in attendance.  Events were held in both the Dallas Convention Center and Reunion Arena.  It was the 33rd Republican Party presidential nominating convention and remains the only convention of either party to be held in Dallas.  The convention was recruited to Dallas by Fred Meyer, chair of the host committee and president of the Tyler Corporation.

President Ronald Reagan was nominated unanimously on the roll call vote.  The Vice Presidential vote was held simultaneously, with Vice President George H. W. Bush receiving 2042 votes and Jack Kemp and Anne Armstrong receiving one vote each.  The vice presidential tally would be the last at a Republican Convention during the 20th century.

Katherine Ortega, Treasurer of the United States, delivered the keynote address.  Other speakers included Elizabeth Dole, United States Secretary of Transportation; Jeane Kirkpatrick, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations; and Jack Kemp, Congressman from Buffalo, New York.
