Scope and Content
The collection consists of one printed bound volume of the 1936 weights and measures ordinance for the City of Dallas. The ordinance was mass produced for public distribution.
As outlined in the city charter, the City of Dallas has the right "to provide for the inspection of weights and measures and fix standards of weights and measures." Designed to ensure fairness and transparency, City of Dallas Ordinance No. 2769 created the office of Inspector of Weights and Measures. The department, under the Sealer of Weights and Measures, was charged with regulating the testing and use of weighing and measuring devices, prohibiting the giving of short weights or measures, and regulating the sale and manufacture of certain commodities with regard to weight, measure, and numerical count.
The Office of Weights and Measures became a part of the City of Dallas Consumer Affairs Department as a portion of City of Dallas Ordinance 13795, passed in 1972. It was repealed by Ordinance 21172, passed in 1992. The remainder of the department's functions were absorbed by the Department of Code Compliance, which still has a Consumer Protection Unit.
