Scope and Content

Collection contains two State of the City Addresses by Mayor Ron Kirk, June 5, 1996, and one copy of a State of the City Address by Mayor Kirk dated June 7, 1999.

Ronald "Ron" Kirk (born June 27, 1954) served as mayor of Dallas, Texas, from 1995 to 2002.  Kirk also ran unsuccessfully for the United States Senate in 2002 and was appointed the sixteenth United States Trade Representative, serving the Obama administration from March 18, 2009, through March 15, 2013.

In 1994, Kirk worked under Texas Governor Ann Richards as Secretary of State of Texas.  The following year, he ran for mayor of Dallas. Kirk was successful in his bid and became the first African American mayor of Dallas, Texas, winning 62 percent of the total vote.   In 1999, Kirk was re-elected as mayor of Dallas in a landslide with 74 percent of the vote. In 2001, Kirk resigned as mayor of Dallas to run for the U.S. Senate.   As mayor, he was preceded by Steve Bartlett and succeeded by Laura Miller.
