Scope and Content
The collection consists of memos, a resolution, photocopied newspaper articles, and a retirement celebration program documenting the retirement of city secretary Robert Sloan.
The city secretary is one of four top officials appointed by the city council. Pursuant to the Dallas City Charter, the city secretary is responsible for attending all city council meetings and keeping accurate records of the actions taken by the council, and overseeing the city's archives and records management program. In addition, the city secretary serves as the election official for all city elections. Robert Sloan served as assistant city secretary from 1968-1976 and as city secretary from 1976-1998. Despite the fact that his retirement was celebrated in September 1997, Sloan continued to serve as city secretary until February 1998.
