Scope and Content
The collection consists of programs, VIP invitations, and a station art brochure celebrating the opening of the first leg of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) light rail system in 1996.
Dallas Area Rapid Transit was created in 1983 when 58 percent of voters in 14 Dallas County cities cast ballots in favor of a one-cent local tax to help fund regional transportation. Revenue from the voter approved funds as well as investment income, fare revenue, and other sources fund the operation and continued development of DART's transit system plan.
In 1996, DART opened the first modern light rail system in the Southwest. The initial 11.2 miles of rail transport opened in June, 1996, with two separate lines both terminating at the Pearl Street Station in downtown. the Red Line running from the Westmoreland Station in West Oak Cliff, and the Blue Line running from the Illinois Station in South Oak Cliff.
