Scope and Content

Collection consists of a letter and a lease agreement.

The letter is from Superintendent WT White to the Dallas Board of Education, dated January 28, 1947, and emphasizes the need for the construction of more schools. Using past data, White estimates a large increase in school enrollment by the early 1950s and urges the board to start construction as soon as possible in order to avoid falling behind.

The lease agreement is between the Dallas Board of Education and Braniff Airways dated June 6, 1944. The agreement stipulates that Obadiah Knight School agrees to rent a portion of the school to Braniff Airways for their use as a training school for personnel.

When it was first established in 1884, the Dallas public school system consisted of six schools and was administered by the City of Dallas's School Board.  In 1947, following a nationwide trend and after repeated requests to separate the school system from municipal control, the Texas Legislature amended the city charter and severed the Dallas Public School District from the City of Dallas, establishing the Dallas Independent School District.

As of 2019, the district is the fourteenth largest in the nation and the second largest in the state.
