Scope and Content

Collection contains original real estate, school, delinquency, automobile, and personal tax records for the City of Dallas.

Taxes have been levied in Dallas since the Town of Dallas originated.  The Town's charter from 1856 gave city leaders the power to tax all persons and property.  

This collection contains partial tax records for the City of Dallas from 1880 through 1980.  The following list shows the specific years and roll types that comprise the collection:

• All years of real estate, school, and delinquency rolls from 1885 to 1950

• Every other year of real estate, school, and delinquency rolls from 1950 to 1970 

• Every five years of real estate, school, and delinquency rolls from 1971 to 1980

• Every five years of automobile rolls from 1940 to 1970 (30 ledgers)

Because the collection is a partial one, requested years may not be available.  Researchers will be provided tax details for the closest years available.

Collection of taxes moved from the city's remit to Dallas County in 2001.
