Scope and Content

The collection consists of materials relating to the renaming of a portion of Lamar Street in Dallas, Texas in memory of Dallas Citizen Botham Jean. Jean was born and raised in

On September 6, 2018, off-duty
Dallas Police Department patrol officer Amber Guyger entered the Dallas, Texas, apartment of 26-year-old accountant Botham Jean and fatally shot him. Guyger said that she had entered the apartment believing it was her own and that she shot Jean believing he was a burglar. Guyger was not arrested for several days, and then only charged with manslaughter, creating mistrust in the process and outrage over the killing of an unarmed black citizen. This resulted in protests and accusations of racial bias. Two months later, the charge was upgraded to murder. Over a year later, on October 1, 2019, Guyger was found guilty of murder. The next day, she received a sentence of ten years in prison.

On January 13, 2021, the Dallas City Council unanimously voted to rename approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) of South Lamar Street from Interstate 30 to South Central Expressway (S.M. Wright Freeway) as Botham Jean Boulevard. The street passes Jean's former apartment and Dallas police headquarters.

The collection consists of a copy of the Dallas City Council ordinance authorizing the street renaming, as well as materials and photography from the renaming ceremony held on March 27, 2021 .
