Scope and Content
Collection consists of
correspondence, research notes, news clippings and photographs documenting the history of Rodgers Community and Little Egypt in the North Lake Highlands neighborhoods of Dallas, Texas.
In 1976 Troop 154, Girl Scouts of America planned and executed a project to honor the United States Bicentennial that would trace the history of the North Lake Highlands area. This project, originally exhibited on poster boards, focused on the Rodgers community, the freedmen community Little Egypt, and the farms once located in the Lake Highlands neighborhood of Dallas,
Texas. Information was gleaned from books, archival research, newspaper accounts, and oral histories conducted with former inhabitants. Photographs both historic and contemporary were utilized in the exhibit.
Lake Highlands, just north of White Rock Lake, borders the City of Richardson on the north, the City of Garland on the east, White Rock Lake and East Dallas on the south, and Lakewood and North Dallas on the west. The neighborhood is bisected from southeast to northwest by US Interstate 635 and from southwest to northeast by the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Blue Line. It is bordered on the south by Northwest Highway and White Rock Lake, and on the west by White Rock Creek and parts of State Highway 75 (Central Expressway).
Organization
The collection is arranged by subject.
