Scope and Content

Collection contains copies of reports, photographs, and files predominantly related to the McCaghren's career with the Dallas Police Department (DPD).

Paul McCaghren is a former DPD officer who was involved in multiple high-profile activities during his tenure.  McCaghren joined the DPD in 1953, ultimately reaching the rank of captain and serving as an assistant chief over vice and intelligence.

McCaghren's service included active roles in the assassination of President John F Kennedy in 1963, the years-long investigation into the "King of Diamonds," a never-identified jewel thief who burgled wealthy Dallasites from the late 1950s through the early 1970s, a drug raid on Oak Lawn park (then named Lee Park) in 1971, and the stand-off, in 1973, at the Inner Circle Lounge where he persuaded two gunmen to surrender with neither of the gunmen nor their hostages harmed.

After twenty-one years with DPD, in 1974, Captain McCaghren retired and opened his own security company.
