​​School Crossing Guard Program


The City of Dallas’ School Crossing Guard Program provides competent adult supervision to help unaccompanied elementary students cross streets near schools on their way to and from school within the Dallas City Limits. To ensure student safety, each crossing guard receives comprehensive training on traffic laws and codes from the State of Texas and the City of Dallas, including general pedestrian safety on public roadways (intersections/crosswalks). This program provides crossing guards for 10 Independent School Districts and 9 private schools located in the Dallas City Limits.​ Crossing guard services are available only to elementary schools. Middle and High Schools may contact the school district’s police department for safety issues.​

CRITERIA FOR PLACEMENT OF CROSSING GUARDS

The City of Dallas Transportation Department developed a School Crossing Guard Assessment Criteria based on prevalent industry standards. In summary, a crossing guard is justified if 20 or more unsupervised students cross a lane or lanes, students cross 4 or more lanes, or the Exposure Index or Gap Study Warrant is met.​ View a detailed flow chart outlining this process

HOW TO REQUEST A NEW CROSSING GUARD

To request a new crossing guard in Dallas ISD, contact Dianna Thompson by email at dithomps@dallasisd.org or by phone at (972) 925-4937. 

​To request a new crossing guard in Richardson ISD, contact Cedric Ingram at Cedric.Ingram@risd.org.

All other school districts and private schools requesting a new crossing guard must complete the form at the following link: City of Dallas School Crossing Guard Request Form​.​ Once completed, forward the form to dallassecurity@dallas.gov for consideration.​
