Holiday Season Garbage & Recycling FAQs

Every year the City of Dallas experiences an increase in the amount of garbage, recycling, and brush & bulky item set outs in the month of December. Here are some FAQs from Sanitation to help inform our customers of our services through the holidays.

Visit the Residential Services and Landfill & Transfer Station pages for more information about recycling and garbage collection, brush and bulky item pick-up, and landfill and transfer station hours and rules.

Q: What is the collection schedule when the City of Dallas observes the Christmas and New Year's Day Holiday?

A: Because both holidays fall on a Sunday this year, there will be no disruption in the normal recycle and garbage collection schedule. However, the Sanitation administrative offices will be closed in observance of the Christmas Holiday on Monday, December 26 and New Year's Day on Monday, January 2.

Q: Is there extra recycle and garbage pickup in December?

A: No, recycle and garbage collection will still be once a week on a customer's scheduled collection day.

Q: What do I do with my decorated tree?

A: Sanitation customers may place Christmas trees out for collection with other brush and bulky items the weekend before their scheduled collection week.  Trees will be landfilled with other materials collected.

A: Any Dallas resident may bring Christmas trees (with all decorations removed) to either McCommas Bluff Landfill or the Northwest Transfer Station. Trees collected in this manner will be repurposed for beneficial uses for Sanitation operations at McCommas Bluff.

Q: What if I have an overflow of garbage and/or recycling?

A:  Dallas residents may dispose of materials for free at McCommas Bluff Landfill or at Sanitation's 3 transfer stations.
