DCH Body

OUR GOAL:

ELIMINATE ALL TRAFFIC-RELATED DEATHS AND REACH A 50% REDUCTION IN SEVERE INJURIES FROM CRASHES BY 2030

Page Content

Traffic deaths in Dallas are increasing at an alarming pace. The human suffering caused by traffic crashes should not be accepted as part of daily life; it can be prevented and avoided. We must come together and act now.

How will we get there? By taking a Vision Zero approach.

  • Data Driven: Focus on the factors and locations most likely to result in death or severe injury, implement proven safety countermeasures, and evaluate our progress.
  • Reduce Speeds: Reduce speeds to what the human body can withstand.
  • Prioritize Pedestrians and Bicyclists: Everyone is a pedestrian at the beginning and end of each trip. To bring down traffic deaths we must prioritize the safety of our most vulnerable roadway users.
  • Focus on Equity: Traffic violence disproportionately impacts people who identify as Black or African American. We must ensure these communities get more than "equal" attention.
  • Collaborative and Comprehensive: Work across departments and partnering agencies to improve safety using engineering, enforcement, education, and evaluation.
  • Shift the Culture: Vision Zero is a fundamental shift in thinking and values, and will require the support of all residents, elected officials, and leaders to be successful.
The complete list of strategies and actions items can be found in the Vision Zero Dallas Action Plan.
