Scope and Content
The City of Dallas Housing Department offers a variety of programs to assist Dallas residents and strengthen communities. The Department's goals are to increase homeownership opportunities (especially for low-income families), preserve existing owner-occupied and rental housing stock, increase the availability of affordable housing opportunities, and support neighborhood- and community-based preservation and revitalization efforts.
The Housing Department was preceded by the Dallas Housing Authority, a city-county board created under the umbrella of the Texas Housing Authorities Law in March 1938, and initially appointed by the mayor of Dallas. Although it was long linked to the City of Dallas, the Housing Authority became a separate entity from city government.
Collection consists of printed studies, reports, and promotional materials, a portion of which is related to the Housing Authority. Though not city government documents, the Housing Authority items reflect the origins and goals of the Housing Department.
