Scope and Content

Collection  consists of annual reports of the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department [DFR] along with statistical data, images, and reports.  The reports address expenditures, personnel, and statistics for the fiscal year.  Other materials document the development of staff and public outreach.

Dallas had an informal firefighting team during the 1860s.  On July 4, 1872, Dallas' first formal firefighting unit was put into place.  W.C. "Bud" Connor was elected chief of the 14-member, volunteer fire department.  The DFR became a fully-salaried city department in 1885 under Chief Charles Kahn.  

In 2000, the DFR changed its name from the Dallas Fire Department to the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department to show more of the department's scope.  As of 2017, the DFR has over 1800 uniformed officers, manages 58 active fire stations, and responds to over 100,000 emergency calls per year.
