Scope and Content
Collection contains monthly reports of mortality statistics from 1931 to 1957. The statistics measure the number of deaths (in general, or due to a specific cause) in a population, scaled to the size of that population, per unit of time.
The City of Dallas Bureau of Vital Statistics issues birth and death certificates and related forms, and maintains birth and death records. Dallas appointed its first health officer in 1873 and created a Board of Health in the late 1890s. The City of Dallas has kept mortality statistics since the 1880s. They were originally documented in governing body minutes and the city annual report. The Vital Statistics Bureau was created in 1910 and continues as a city government function, although the centralized recording of births and deaths by the State of Texas became law in 1903.
