Scope and Content
Collection documents the annexation of the Lagow Independent School District to the City of Dallas in 1919 through the efforts of the Lagow District and the Dallas Board of Education. The City of Dallas, and later the Dallas Board of Education, administered the city’s public schools from 1884 until the creation of the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) in 1947.
Prior to the DISD numerous school districts serving formerly rural communities were consolidated or annexed to the City. Lagow was an unincorporated community situated within the historic Thomas Lagow League, which today is roughly in the area bounded by Malcolm X Boulevard, Metropolitan Avenue, and Hatcher Street. Until the City of Dallas’ boundaries grew to reach the Fair Park area and to the Southeast, Lagow residents created a public school district to serve the population.
The collection contains a petition to the Dallas Mayor and Board of Commissioners requesting annexation of the Lagow Independent School District, field survey notes, and a map establishing the district’s boundaries, and two items of correspondence documenting the Board of Education’s approval and acceptance of the transaction. The survey map was relocated to oversized box for proper storage.
