Scope and Contents

Collection consists of an ordinance book describing the issuance of examinations, licenses, and regulations for electricians in Dallas, Texas.

City commissioners approved an ordinance regulating the installation, operation, and maintenance of electric wires, apparatus, and plants in 1918.

The Examining and Supervising Board of Electricians was created by city ordinance in 1924. The main goals of the board were to ensure proper training and licensing of electricians working in Dallas and to review City of Dallas electrical codes. Previously, the board operated under the supervision of the Building Inspection Division in Public Works Department of the City of Dallas and has gone through several title changes. 

Currently, the board falls under the Building Inspection Advisory, Examining and Appeals Board, and the board members are appointed by the City Council.  The Building Inspection Advisory, Examining and Appeals Board is responsible for protecting the citizens of Dallas through the administration and interpretation of building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical codes.

This ordinance book includes the 1923 National Electrical Code of the National Board of Fire Underwriters.
