Scope and Content

The City of Dallas Department of Court and Detention Services, formerly called Corporation Court, is charged with managing and operating the Dallas Municipal Court that adjudicates Class C misdemeanors, providing support as Official Clerk of the Court of Record, directing and managing the activities of the Municipal Court, The Office of the Dallas Marshal and Detention Center, and incarcerating City of Dallas prisoners at the Dallas County Lew Sterrett Justice Center Facility. Services divisions include Fiscal Services, Case Management, Detention Services, and Enforcement.

Collection consists of black and white photographic prints documenting the relocation and remodeling of the Corporation Court quarters between 1954 and 1957 and the Corporation Court Staff between 1950 and 1953. The images, created by the City Photographer, are then-and-now comparisons showing the previous location in a former fire station, former and present judges’ chambers, courtrooms, interior and exterior cashier windows, docket records section, and the court clerk, deputy clerk, and chief prosecutor quarters. The scrapbook was accompanied by two photographic prints of the Corporation Court staff in November 1950 and August 1953.

The scrapbook was unbound in 2003 to prevent further deterioration of photographic prints.  Prints were sleeved and original order of images was maintained. Captions from disintegrated labels were penciled on corresponding prints.
