Scope and Contents
Collection consists of Dallas Police Department Park Patrol Manuals. The Dallas City Charter Amendment of 1907 authorized the Park Board to hire police for the Dallas city parks. In 1939, an organized park police force was officially established. This collection contains manuals (and updates to them) written by the Dallas Police Department specifically for the Park Patrol officers. The manuals emphasize that the enforcement of laws should be in a friendly, polite manner. They measured the success and efficiency of the patrols not by the number of arrests made but by the decrease or absence of vandalism and citizen complaints. The specific years for the manuals are 1957, 1972, 1976, 1980, and 1985.
The collection also contains Park Police, a booklet written for the American Institute of Park Executives by L. B. Houston. Houston was the director of the Dallas Park and Recreation Department from 1939 to 1972. This booklet is part of the Management Aids series.
