Scope and Content
Collection documents early sidewalk paving in the City of Dallas, Texas. The first sidewalks in Dallas were privately built, usually wooden planks with little or no anchoring. The City of Dallas began the regulation of street, sidewalk, and alley construction in 1871 and began to provide some sidewalks as early as 1872, but true City-supervised construction appears to have begun by ordinance in 1887. Organized and systematic construction did not occur until about 1906, however, when a position of sidewalk inspector was created.
Sidewalk construction was performed by a number of City of Dallas departments throughout the twentieth century. Today new sidewalks are planned and executed by the Engineering and Construction Services division of the Department of Public Works. Repair and maintenance is performed by the Department of Street Services.
Collection contains construction project lists and memoranda between 1911 and 1918 from the city engineer recommending approval to the City of Dallas Board of Commissioners. Project lists are organized by year and include street names and property owners.
