Scope and Contents

Collection documents the City of Dallas’ 1915-1917 attempts to correct safety deficits in railroad grade crossings within the city through collaboration with several railroads.

Grade separation is the process of aligning a junction of two or more transport axes at different heights (grades) such that they do not disrupt the flow of traffic on one another when they cross. This is achieved by building bridges over or tunnels under the crossing site, allowing roads, railways, and canals to pass another without interrupting the flow of traffic. A junction that is grade-separated is called an interchange, as opposed to an intersection that is not grade-separated; a lack of grade separation is described as "at-grade".

The collection contains primarily correspondence between City of Dallas Mayor Henry D. Lindsley (1872-1938) and officials representing the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway, The Houston and Texas Central Railroad, and the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railway regarding the maintenance or elimination of grade crossings in Dallas. A draft ordinance and newspaper clippings concerning grade crossings are also included.
