Scope and Content

The City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department provides leisure, recreational and cultural activities for the citizens of Dallas and the general public and maintains more than 21,000 park acres including 4400 surface acres of water at 17 park sites, 17,196 acres of greenbelt/park land, and 61.6 miles of jogging and bike trails at 24 locations.  There are over 400 individual parks, including recreational facilities such as community centers, swimming pools, athletic fields, and a metropolitan zoo.

The report was written by Wynne B. Woodruff, landscape architect, who was commissioned by the board to create a master plan for the maintenance and growth of the Dallas park system.  In 1934, there were approximately sixty-four parks and spaces ranging from small plots of less than 1/10 of an acre up to 2,500 acres.  The report includes recommendations both for renovation for older parks and new development for later ones.  Some parks retain the same names used in the report; others have been renamed since 1934.

Collection consists of the original typescript report and accompanying drawings and plans.  Selected drawings were unbound from the bindings to prevent further deterioration. Many, but not all drawings, are color renderings.  Some drawings and suggestions are conjectural and were not implemented.

Organization

The collection is arranged by subject.  The collection contains oversized objects.
