Scope and Content
 

Collection consists of Dallas Transit System financial and operational reports, Public Transit Board meeting minutes, and transit schedules, from 1973 to 1988.

The Dallas Transit System (DTS) was the result of the consolidation of privately owned transit companies and streetcar lines after state legislation empowered the City of Dallas to own and operate mass transit services.  DTS operated from 1964 to 1988, after which it was replaced by the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) when 58% percent of voters in 14 Dallas County cities cast ballots in favor of a one-cent local tax to help fund regional transportation.  In addition to municipal bus service, DTS also managed Surface Transportation, Inc., or Surtran.  

Formed in 1972, Surtran was a joint venture between the City of Dallas and the City of Fort Worth and was designed to provide a link between Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and the two cities.  The precursor to the Dallas Transit System was the Dallas Railway and Terminal Company.
