To get started as a DAS Volunteer, fill out our Volunteer Application!
After your application is accepted, you will be able to take our New Volunteer Orientation online, which includes a short video and comprehension quiz. During this video orientation, you will learn about DAS, our programs and policies, and various volunteer opportunities.
After you complete the comprehension quiz, you'll be able to attend one of our Welcome Sessions where you'll receive a tour, your volunteer t-shirt, and then be eligible to sign up for Animal Handling training classes or a variety of non-animal handling volunteer roles!*
*Due to the COVID-19 emergency, our Welcome Sessions and Animal Handling training courses are suspended until
further notice. All volunteers who have applied and completed our online Volunteer Orientation will be notified when sessions reopen. Please email DASVolunteer@dallascityhall.com
with any questions about becoming a new volunteer or adjustments in operations due to COVID-19.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age (please see Minor Volunteers below ).

Volunteers as young as the age of 5 are welcome at DAS, however, there are specific rules surrounding volunteering before the age of 18.

Many of our volunteers also become foster parents and help to save the lives of the most vulnerable animals in our shelter by providing them a temporary home away from the shelter. Find out more about fostering now.
- Group Volunteer Opportunities are available for two-hour time frames (longer time frames can be scheduled).
- Opportunities include taking photos of adoptable animals, making toys, distributing treats, and beautification/organization projects
- Bringing much-needed donations to the shelter for the animals (i.e., towels, blankets, soft treats, and newspaper)
