Scope and Content
The collection consists of public notices announcing hearings conducted by the Director of Public Utilities related to items of public concern, such as telephone rate increases, cable television operations, and special services transportation permits. Many of the special services transportation permits relate to Surtran, a city-owned transit service provided to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
Appointed by the City Council, the Director of Public Utilities was responsible for supervising and negotiating rates of utility franchises operating within the city. To keep the public informed about the intentions and direction of utility franchises, the director conducted open hearings designed to give the public an opportunity to hear and present testimony relevant to rate setting. The position of Director of Public Utilities no longer exists.
