Scope and Content

The Collection documents the City of Dallas official commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November, 2013. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas on November 22, 1963, an event that has defined the City of Dallas in many ways. Dallas Police Department Patrolman J.D. Tippit, who was on patrol in Oak Cliff the afternoon of the assassination, was killed in the line of duty by Lee Harvey Oswald.

The City of Dallas has held few commemorations since these tragedies, but as the 50th anniversary approached Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings appointed a planning and fundraising committee to prepare for a formal observance. Public donations covered the cost, and no tax money was used. Philanthropist Ruth Altschuler served as committee chair.
The city held a public memorial ceremony on November 22, 2013 to mark the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy's assassination. Bells tolled across the city, and the event featured historian David McCullough, who read from Kennedy’s presidential speeches; speeches by Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and religious leaders; a performance of the U.S. Naval Academy Men’s Glee Club; and a moment of silence.

The collection documents the planning of the event, commemorative ephemera, and documentation photography of an exhibit by the Dallas Municipal Archives, and the commemoration event. Audio includes a musical composition  commissioned for the commemoration and performed by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The oversizedseries includes items that were distributed on the day of the commemoration.
